In our global market, it order for a company to remain
competitive, they must protect their most precious asset, which is their
employees. It is no longer enough to keep producing the same product that sold
so well last year. We are in the age of technology and innovation. You have to
introduce to the market the most advanced technology. You no longer are in
competition with the company down the road but with the companies halfway
around the world.
So how does a company stay on top of its market in
innovation and technology. First, they have to hire the very best. After, you
have the very best working for you, comes the hard part. Getting their minds to
work better than anyone else in your market. You have to maximize their brain
capacity. Buddah said “ We are what we think, without thoughts we make our
world.”(Mauro Libi)
It is essential for companies to create an environment
of positivity. Otherwise, you could not produce the results that you should
with your human talent. There is an expression, “Garbage in, Garbage out”. A
study of data from 84 firms supplying the German car industry shows that the
degree of managerial negativity and the environment of the organization have a
big impact.(Mauro Libi Crestani)
The study showed the effect of ‘negative cognition’ on innovation and
entrepreneurship. Negative perceptions of changes in the operating
environment and defensive strategies are likely to lead to less innovative
products and stifle creativity and entrepreneurship. We need to take an integrated,
multi-dimensional approach to understanding innovation and new-product
development decisions(Mauro Libi).
A positive atmosphere and environment to foster and
grown thought takes into account that there are no bad ideas, just
opportunities to learn and grow. Linus Pauling is quoted, “To have a good idea
, You must first have lots of ideas.”. Tim Brown and Jocelyn Wyatt while
discussing innovation spoke about Design Thinking Approach. That deals
with innovation based on user needs. Jerry Sternin from Tufts University
discussed positive deviance. Inspired ideas can not be forced on the employee
or on the public. Imposed concepts do not work (Mauro Libi Crestani).
Encourage positive failure. Failure is a critical part
of success. Your best ideas are rarely the ones that will be accepted. Your
first attempts at anything important are usually miserable failures. But that
should not stop you from trying. Innovative success is the result of many
spoiled attempts that eventually result in triumph. Management must learn to
praise creative problem-solving even when the end result isn’t quite what you’d
hoped.
“Capital
isn’t so important in business,”
American industrialist Harvey Firestone said. “Experience isn’t so important…. What is important is ideas. If you
have ideas, you have the main asset you need, and there isn’t any limit to what
you can do with your business and your life.”
If you don’t have a “thinking team” in your
organization, now might be the time to consider recruiting one. If this hasn’t
been an area of focus for you, I have good news: Innovative thinking is a skill
that can be learned and developed. I am confident that when you invest in great
people and great ideas, these lightbulb moments will become a regular and
profitable part of your business! Keep the atmosphere positive and with the
right people, it will happen (Mauro
Libi Crestani).
