Mauro Libi Crestani: Profit and sustainable solutions to social issues

Can a company gain a competitive advantage while solving social problems. In fact, that is what the most innovative and successful companies are currently doing. We need to overcome the stigma associated with profit-seeking behaviors. Profit is actually essential for enabling scalable and sustainable solutions to social issues. We need to stop criticizing profit-seeking behaviors of companies and at the same time attempt to channel some of those profits toward towards greater social purposes. After all, the source of all philanthropic donations and tax revenues come from business profits in the first place.

Mark Zuckerberg started Internet.org. Did he start this company for profit or for the greater good of society? When we get involved into that debate , then we are at war with the very companies that can do good and have the money resources to help society. Facebook and Google in 2013 committed their companies to getting the 5 billion people around the world without Internet access online. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook wants this project to be known as charity. He tried to downplay the idea that it is a share value and that his company gains also from helping others. “ … focused on [Internet access] more because we think it’s something good for the world rather than something that is going to be really amazing for our profits.” But seriously, what is wrong if Facebook and Google gain why they bring internet to poor and third world countries? Third world and impoverished countries will have access to information that can help them in business and in agriculture and in finance and where they can have internet access to medical doctors. This is the right social issue for Facebook and Google to take on, because they want to solve it. It aligns business and social incentives. At the same time most of the people who the companies help connect will become Facebook and Google users, and potentially drive incremental profit for the companies. We need to stop worrying whether these companies gain from such initiatives and accept that they have found a perfect way to use capitalism to do good.

Mauro Libi Crestani: Positive Attitude to rule enterprises

In today's era of high technology it important for any company to adapt and change. Can you imagine a computer company or a cell phone company that is selling the same model that they came out with five years ago? My dad had a gall bladder surgery performed twenty years ago. The surgery was a long one and he stayed in the hospital for two weeks and it was a hard recovery Today that same surgery is an out patient surgery. Knowledge and technology changes the way we do things at such a rapid rate. The winning company is the one with the latest technology first.

For you and your company to be the first at discovering, learning and adapting to the latest in technology it takes a certain attitude. It is important for your company to hire people that have a positive attitude. you want an environment where your employees believe that they are the best and that they will remain the best. People that do not believe that they do not have the ability to be the best will not come up with new ideas. If the attitude in the company is that you will not get the support to do your research then you probably will not put in the effort needed to come up with that winning idea.

If you work in a company where there are negative attitudes. Where employees do not like being in that company, you will not get your best from your employees in that situation. Employees will constantly be looking for a different place to work at that they actually want to be at. So employee turnover may be high. In an environment of negativity you will not find your team working towards any positive goals, there will not be any spirit of cooperation, sick calls from employees will be more common, no one will really try to utilize their skills to their maximum abilities.

The Kroger Co. is one of the world's largest grocery retailers, with fiscal 2014 sales of $108.5 billion. The Kroger Co. Family of Stores spans many states with store formats that include grocery and multi-department stores, discount, convenience stores and jewelry stores. A very successful company. However, this company has been awarded the number one spot by Forbes magazine. It's prestigious number one pick by this magazine is not for it's revenue collected but for it's belief in giving back to it's communities. It has given 11% of it's profits to it's foundation.

The Kroger Co. Foundation continues our long tradition of working to make our communities better places.Through The Kroger Co. Foundation, they award millions of dollars in grants every year to local organizations that have been recommended by our retail operating divisions. In addition to supporting food banks, breast cancer organizations, and other organizations that help individuals achieve their full potential, the Foundation has provided financial support to a variety of other worthy grant recipients, Greater Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation of Dallas to provide scholarships for Hispanic youth.

The Julian Center in Indianapolis to offer shelter and services for women escaping domestic violence and their children. Open Hand in Atlanta to provide meals to home bound individuals struggling with AIDS and other chronic illnesses and disabilities. San Diego Coast Keeper to support of coastal cleanup efforts at Southern California beaches. Spokane Public Library in Washington for a summer science education program. This is just a short list of the many organizations that they are helping.

A company that makes it money from the communities in which they are located and also giving back 11% to it's communities is an example that all companies should try to model. It would solve so many of social problems.

Mauro Libi Crestani: A positive attitude can make one happy in life

Having a positive attitude can bring one great success. Many writings have proven that. being positive unleashes ones full potential and allows their mind not to be clouded with depression that would block their ability to think clearly and to be creative. I would like to talk about something different today. i would like to talk about a different kind of success.

We have one life to live and we should enjoy our one life. When was a little boy, one of my teachers tried to teach us a class lesson. She asked us what we want to be when we grow up. Most of us answered either the president or a super rich person. She then asked us if being rich and powerful would make us happy and we all answered YES. At that point she had us read a story called 'the fisher and the sea". It was about an old man that was very happy even though he was very poor and he lived in a shack. One day he caught a magic fish that promised to grant him whatever he wanted if only he would free the fish. The fisherman agreed but he said that he had no wishes. the fisherman was happy with his life. he was very happy. He got to fish everyday and he had no stress. When they fisherman's wife heard what happened, she made her husband ask the fish for riches and power and more and more each day she wanted another wish. She was never happy with what she had.

A positive person knows how to be happy and will be successful in his life regardless of money. That person will know how to dance and sing and enjoy foods and just enjoy life. A negative person will not be happy regardless of what they have. their life will be a failure even if they are successful and rich.

A rich businessman is quoted as saying, "We work like dogs and get paid peanuts. There’s hardly any time for holidays or just to relax in general because you’re always thinking ahead: when the next deadline or meeting is. There is hardly a fair sense of work-life balance here". Sounds like his negativity is making him a failure at life even though by other peoples standards he is a huge success. A street vendor in Paraguay (a country that tied Panama for most positive) said this about her life, happiness and money: "Life is short and there are no reasons to be sad because even if we were rich, there would still be problems. We have to laugh at ourselves."

37 percent of the people on Forbes list of Wealthiest Americans are less happy than the average American. At any given time, one forth of Americans are mildly depressed. Now we find in Latin America, their culture does not accept being negative. They dance, they party, they play sports, they enjoy life, even though most of them live in poverty. A positive attitude can make one happy in life and according to most Americans consider happiness more important to them than money, moral goodness, and even going to Heaven. I happen to agree with that.

Mauro Libi Crestani: A positive attitude is good for your health

Scott Hamilton had many reasons to give up on life. He was an Olympic champion. His calendar was booked as a professional skater. He was actually on tour when he was diagnosed with cancer. His doctors gave him a year to live at best. Scott had an amazing positive attitude that possibly saved his life. He is quoted as saying, " The only disability in life is a badattitude". Scott believed that him getting cancer and almost dying was the best thing that happened to him. He started on a happy life after his survival and was very successful for his career.

The Mayo Clinic says that a positive attitude has the following effects on your health:

Increased life span

Lower rates of depression

Lower levels of distress

Greater resistance to the common cold

Better psychological and physical well-being

Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease

Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress

Scott Hamilton learned a lesson from cancer. He learned to respect each day and make the best of each and every day. He learned to enjoy his family. He learned to enjoy his work and make the best of it. He learned never to give up and knew if he did he would be a winner. " I would urge anybody to weather the storm, because on the other side of it will be something great."

Mauro Libi Crestani: Success in life comes from believing in yourself

Napoleon Bonaparte commanded the entire French army at the age of 26. At the age of 30, he engineered a coupod-etat in Paris and declared himself as Emperor of France a few years later. Napoleon's morals were not desirable, what we are going to discuss is how Napoleon's positive attitude made it possible for him to be so successful.

One of his most famous quotes was, " If you want a thing done well, do it yourself." He believed that no one could accomplish a task as well as he could. He had full faith in his talents and intellect. This does not mean that his attitude alone win his battles. He was always prepared, studied the situation and was one step ahead of his opponent.

"Impossible is a word only to found in the dictionary of fools", was another of Napoleon. Going into life with the attitude that something can fail will almost assure failure. General Eisenhower once said, when asked what would have happened if the Allies had been thrown back into the sea when invading Mussolini’s Italy, “it would have been very bad, but I never allowed my mind to think that way”.

Success in life comes from believing in yourself and study and planning very well. “Imagination rules the world." was another of Napoleon's quotes. All the great achievers have had imagination. Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Ghandi, the list goes on and on. To have imagination you first need to believe in yourself. You must have a positive attitude. Negativity closes the mind to clear thinking because the word "I can't" is in your mind and it blocks you from thinking clearly.

Napoleon's positive attitude brought to success but he didn't allow himself to think of the pitfalls. A positive attitude can help you achieve success but it is important to be aware of the bad and adverse situations that you face. You can not allow the negative to cloud your thinking and get you depressed but you can also not ignore it.
