Mauro Libi: Positive thinking is the best gift one can give themselves

There is a children's story that has been around since I was a child, it is called , 'The little train that could'. The story is about a little toy train that wanted to be like the huge locomotive commercial engines. One day, the big train broke and the little toy train pulled the load of the big train. All the time the little train said,' I think I can, I think I can'.

This children's story is a great lesson in the power of Positive Thinking. If we believe we can make it happen.

I do not want to be the bearer of bad news, especially in an article on positive thinking but we can not do everything we want just because we believe that we can. Abraham Lincoln was famous for saying ,"All men are created equal". Well, no disrespect to President Lincoln but all men are not created equal.  Some of us have the talent to be a great doctor, some have the talent to be the greatest swimmer of our times. If you have no athletic ability, wanting to play for the NBA with all the best of thinking and attitude will not get you a contract.

Now do not get me wrong. Positive thinking is the best gift one can give themselves. But you have to be realistic and positive at the same time. With positive thinking, you can follow the navy saying ,'Be all you can be'. You can be the greatest that ever existed with the talents that you have. If you look at successful people, they are so full of positive thought. Mohammed Ali, used to tell everyone , ' I am the greatest'. Donald Trump also tells everyone and himself what a winner he is. I once read in a book on becoming a U.S. President and the candidate running for president was told that he could only help the country if he believed that he was the only one capable of doing the job. Find your talent and be the best.

Mauro Libi Crestani: Bad attitude, no business

Norman Vincent Peale said, " A person who sends out positive thoughts activates the world around him positively and draws back to himself positive results".  A positive attitude is contagious. As a leader you set the tone. Imagine, if a company has a morning huddle of its top executives with the president of the company. The president has a bad attitude. He comes in criticizing his mangers. He puts them down and tells everyone that the company will probably go under. He threatens their jobs and they do not feel happy about the company or secure. How do you think the managers will then in turn treat their employees? How do you think they will treat their customers?

The good news it that it works the other way also. It's amazing how your attitude, whether positive or negative,  as a manager can set the tone among your workers and customers. Have you ever worked around someone with an unpleasant attitude? Did you like it? If you set the tone for a positive attitude, if you can make your employees feel like they are the best and can accomplish anything, they in turn will make their customers feel like they are the best and can accomplish anything. Would you want to be around such happy people, around a group of winners?

Now this is not always easy. When you have personal issues, financial issues , business concerns, in those times it is. It always easy to have a positive attitude. One of my friends who was a true business leader and ran a very successful company was always upbeat and positive. When I found out later all his family problems, I was surprised. I had no idea. I always thought he had s charmed life. He was the person who I admired and thought had a charmed life.

There is a song from a children's movie with this powerful message. " That's why you gotta never let them see you down, gotta smile while you are hurting, and whistle while you work".

So remember that you do control your attitude. Have a positive outlook and you will lift the spirits of those around you. You will find that not only will you be successful but those around you will thrive under your leadership.

Mauro Libi Crestani: The smile may be the most powerful sales tool ever

When you or your employees meet a client for a potential sale or a potential new customer, impressions really matter. Before you even say a word, the customer is forming opinions about you and your company. Are you prepared to make this sale? Yes, you carefully prepared what you are going to say, you also dressed just right. What may be the most important aspect of the sales meeting is often ignored. This one important aspect, can make or break your sale. This is to remember to smile. The smile may be the most powerful sales tool ever.

A good leader knows that a product is only as good as the employees that make it. If the people in a company are happy and have positive attitudes this reflects on their management. If you go to a company to consider using them and no one at that company seems happy and no one is smiling, this is a company that zaps the energy out of its employees. Would you want to get involved in that company? If the employees are that negative and sad, they probably hate their company and what they do.   As a customer, you see the hell that the employees feel that they are in and it is best for you to get out of there fast.

As a manager or group leader, it is your responsibility to create a positive happy atmosphere. When your employees greet customers, they need to smile and let the customer see how positive your company is and to leave the potential customer feeling great.  That customer should feel the positive joy of your employees and want to be part of your company. The potential client should feel that they are in a happy place, a respectful place and a place that is always willing to help its customers. The client needs to feel that your company will be around a long time. That its employees stay a long time and as a result are experienced. Leaving the customer with that assured feeling that your company was their best choice and making them feel like your employees and management will be helpful will also guarantee you future referrals.

I always tell managers to learn the following rule ... No smile, no interest, no sale.

Mauro Libi: How to combat low employee productivity

One of the reasons why low employee productivity occurs according to experts is because of how the employee works and not by the nature of work itself. There are several ways to measure productivity, but most consider a large amount of work completed in a short period of time.

There are employees who are able to perform tasks in fewer hours than others, which does not make them more productive. You have to understand the amount of work is not always the main indicator of productivity. Increasing the quantity is of little use if the quality suffers.

There are employees who are trained in their field and are unable to work as fast as the other team members. That problem may be due to other factors that have nothing to do with intelligence, but with poor organization, personal problems, etc.

Those skilled in Time Management  offer advice to overcome these weaknesses: You have to start the day with a list of the unfinished tasks from the previous day. Start with the tasks that need to be executed immediately. You can resolve emergency issues via phone, fax or email. Conclude each task before you start another task. Being productive means that you accomplish so many tasks. Accomplishing a task means that you completed that task assignment. As your day comes to an end file your completed task and make a list of your obligations that must be met the next day.
Put everything on the agenda. Employees and successful entrepreneurs do not have a bad memory but poor  disorganization. Managing an organization requires disciplineperseverance, organization and positive attitude.

Mauro Libi Crestani: The word success is there only in the dictionary?

A young reader of my blogs said that in his personal experience, he understood that success was only a word was in the dictionary, and apparently - according to their perception-had only a linguistic meaning. He also told me that he found it "interesting" that I considered my father as "asuccessful man".

Certainly there are many people who have the same perception of the success that the young reader. For years they have perceived the victory as something that does not exist and have not received information about the true nature of success, as individuals, as entrepreneurs and as a society.

Since I'm not an expert in these matters, I just dedicate myself to write my opinion on such issues, I suggest you review the dictionary definition of success, exactly as the young man says. In the dictionary of the Spanish language it says that success is a word of Latin origin on exitus meaning ("Exit"), and the concept refers to the right effect or consequence of an action or of an enterprise. Its root is more or less obvious by the context in which we use this word as many times expressed "excel," "out above the competition" and "out of the darkness of anonymity".

He explains that success is a subjective and relative share, and is associated with the victory and gaining merit-based objectives.
How I personally interpret success is when we plan the goals we want in life, whether medium or large, and we succeeded. We accomplished our planned goal.
There are many who say that success is measured by the degree of satisfaction of having achieved a goal to my satisfaction. This is a feeling of success and accomplishment. It's a good internal feeling. This can only be described as a spiritual feeling.

Our commercial and materialistic society these days establishes a relationship between success and material wealth or fame and celebrity. This perception is distorted.  If you are not as famous as Justin Bieber or rich like Tiger Woods, then you feel unsuccessful.
Those who are not satisfied internally when they achieve a goal, however small, are likely to have problems in understanding how success works. Success leads to a state of satisfaction but does suggest greater responsibility, more organization, discipline and working  hard work without rest. Focus on the goal and the daily details and reinforce positive attitude.

I recommend to all those who do not believe in success, or who fear success defined targets. What do they want in their life ?, Where do they want to go once they know what they want. Face your obstacles to realizing those goals and overcome those obstacles. Work with determination on the rail leading to the conclusion of those goals.

Mauro Libi Crestani: Share value initiative changed companies purpose

A long time ago, I took a marketing course where the topic was image. The concept was that it was not the product but the image that sold. They gave us an example of a Wendi's commercial. In this commercial you saw a family eating burgers at Wendi's and they kept wiping their mouths with napkins. The commercial ended by saying that Wendi had the juiciest burger in town. The commercial was a big hit and people wanted the juicier burger. The true fact was that Wendi cut chunks of fat into their meat and that was why it was juicier. It was mostly melted fat. Imagine if Wendi had said the truth. That they sell the most unhealthiest burger with chunks of fat in it. Nobody would buy it. But that was how business was done thirty years ago. It was all about profit. The health of the public didn't matter to corporate America.

Then came along the concept of sharedvalueinitiative. That is where companies look at their purpose differently. With shared value the concept is if you do what is in the community interest and for their well being then you will gain also. Wendi started to look to make their meals healthier. They hired registered dietitians. Their menu now includes salads, diet coke, unsweetened ice tea. They let you know the number of calories in each item. Their burger is 100% pure beef. Their cheese burger is only 300 calories. Now Wendi talks about fat/ lean ratio. Wendi has put in a major effort to offer healthy nutritious menus for its customers.

Mauro Libi: 'The power of positive thinking'

Norman Vincent Peale wrote a book called 'The power of positive thinking'. This was in 1952. His book was to stay on the New York Times best seller list for 186 weeks.  Vincent as a child developed an inferiority complex that affected his life personally and professionally. With time and positive thinking he overcame that handicap. He believed that if you develop a strong sense of self and believe in yourself then you are more apt to act on task. That if you do not believe that you can accomplish a task then you will easily give up and not even try. Can you just imagine a salesman that doesn't believe that he can sell the product to his customer? ...... Now, imagine the salesman that believes in his ability to sell..... Which of them is more likely to make the sale?... Which of them will study the product well because he believes he will make good money off of it?.... Which of them is more likely to get up early on the day of the sale, be excited about the meeting, dress well for the meeting... And present himself and his company well.

A criticism of the philosophy of positive thinking is that it is a form of self-hypnosis. If you tell yourself enough times that you can accomplish something, it will become part of your personality. Known as autosuggestion. Is this a bad thing? Peale said, " Believe in yourself. Have faith in your abilities. Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your powers you can not be successful or happy". With positive thinking he felt you were less likely to give up on projects and would see them through to completion. That obstacles that got in your way, would not seem so difficult to overcome.  That we would prefer criticism when we needed it as our self worth would use that criticism to help us be stronger and more successful.  Problems that came out way, if we looked for the solution would actually have the seeds for us to succeed. Because of our attitude we would go into life with zest and enthusiasm.

Mauro Libi Crestani: 'Today is going to be the best day of my life'.

Every morning you should wake up and look into the mirror and tell yourself, 'today is going to be the best day of my life'. A quote from Buddha, ' the mind is everything, what you think you become'. Let your mind know that you are serious about making everyday a wonderful, loving , meaningful and happy day, a productive day, a profitable day'. There are so many negative thoughts that run through our mind each day, that we must clear and make room for all our positive thoughts and power. Dr. Dick Barnes, a consultant used to say,' Now that you believe that today will be the best day of your life, start right now finding ways to make that happen'.

Mauro Libi: Joel Osteen said: 'Your best life now'

Joel Osteen is a pastor who has had amazingsuccess. He has been successful, in both in personal life and in his professional life. His church has grown from eight thousand to thirty thousand in the last six years. Joel also wrote a best seller book that speaks to why he has been so successful. His book is called, 'Your best life now'. It is all about having a positive attitude and the wonderful things such an attitude can bring you in life. Joel calls it, the power of positive believing.

Joel said in an interview, "I just think people respond to hope and encouragement and that atmosphere of victory in the celebration that we have each week.  There are so many things pulling us down each week. People want to come and get something to lift them up'. Whether it's a business deal that you are trying to close, imagine how receptive your perspective client will be if her feels encouraged by you and your company, that you guys make him feel confident in you and you make him feel like this deal is so positive, will be such a win for  him. What a powerful message and feeling you can convey to others. On a personal front, imagine a guy asking a girl out for a date and he makes her feel good and happy. In your positive message to others, you need to convey, that this business deal or this personal date is not a one man show. That you are a goodteam. That you both are in this together. A positive attitude encourages people, it makes them feel that there is a better way, there is a better life. If you have a good attitude and convey that attitude to others, then great things can happen.

Mauro Libi: Sometimes a winner is a dreamer who just won't quit

There is a movie I love called 'Rudy'. It is based on a true story.  It is about a young man, not the brightest and he has no athletic ability.  He wanted to play football for Notre Dame. Everyone laughed  at his dream but he has no doubt that it will happen.  He is the definition of positive attitude and the example of what it can accomplish. His grades were poor, he had no money to pay the tuition and he was only 5' 2" with no skills to play football. Of course the University of Notre Dame turned down his application. When people say dreams don't come true, tell them about Rudy.

Sometimes a winner is a dreamer who just won't quit. Rudy slept where he could, took whatever job he could get, bartered to get tutoring to bring up his grades in a community college. He never gave up. He believed that he would play for Notre Dame and after two years of applying, he not only got into the school, he got accepted on it's football team. How could a 5' 2" young man with no athletic skills get to play for one of the best college football teams in the country. There is an old saying.....It's not the size of the dog in the fight, It's the size of the fight in the dog.... Rudy with a positive attitude and hard work made an impossible dream to be possible.

Mauro Libi Crestani: A successful businessman knows which projects to work on and which ones to abandon.

A long time ago, my company had a business consultant working with my employees to create a more positive attitude.  The consultant put a plaque on the wall and made the entire staff read what it said...." God grant me the serenity to accept the things that I can not change..... The courage to change the things  I can..... And the wisdom to know the difference. " The consultant explained that when we fail in business, we get caught up in trying to fix what went wrong. We can not accept failure and keep working on this failing project and find it hard to admit defeat. When a business project has failed, admit that you failed and then move on to the next project. Take the loss, accept it. Do not put more time and money in a failing project.

Even though you have failed at a project, it doesn't mean that you are a failure or that your business is a failure. Look for a totally new project with new ideas. Remember, that you are a winner. You can affect real positive change in the company. If you do not let your mind get caught up in all the negativity from your loss and work on those changes that will show what a winner you are.  You have to have a positiveattitude and realize that you can not control everything. You will realize the things that you can control and work them. A good and successful businessman knows which projects to work on and which ones to abandon.

Mauro Libi: A bad apple in the bunch can ruin the whole bunch

Optimist see the path, while pessimist see the obstacle. When faced with a challenge, optimist look for opportunities. Negative thinkers just give up. They think it is always going to fail. It is important for a company to hire positive thinkers and to train its employees in positive thinking.

There are workshops that train in the art of positivethinking. They will first look for negative attitudes and thinking in the company. A bad apple in the bunch can ruin the whole bunch. If you have an employee that doesn't want to work, he can affect the attitude of other workers. Next, you look for bad habits in the company. You can break the cycle of pessimism and negative thinking. After you rid the company of negativity, you work on creating a positive environment.

If the company has areas where it has failed in the past, you can teach the employees to move one rock at a time and with time the whole mountain will be moved. We will tackle the problem areas with an attitude that 'we are what we think we are.' If we think we are winners , then we will be winners. It will take hard work and tackling  one step at a time. With time we can rewire all the employees to believe that they have a winning team and to get them motivated to work toward that winning goal. To train them not to let a failure make them think that they have failed. But as winners, they will know that they can resolve this problem and win in the end.

Mauro Libi: Share Value initiative help enterprises to affect social changes

A Japanese beer company called Kirin Brewery decided to become part of Shared Value Initiative. They wanted to effect social change. First, they felt that as a company providing alcoholic beverages that they should share the responsibility for drunk driving. So they developed the first non-alcoholic beverage that taste like beer called Kirin-free. Drunk driving in Japan has decreased 63% in the last 20 years and Kirin would like to think that they played a part.

When an earthquake hit in 2011 in Japan, Kirin launched a support program providing six million yen to assist in the reconstruction efforts. They also are using the juice of pears produced in the Fukushima region. This area had rumors after a nuclear accident that were not true that the trees were harmful.

One does not think of an alcoholic company as benefiting society, but as Kirin Co. has  proven with shared valueinitiative, we all can help each other by working together toward a common  .

Mauro Libi: Business have to work with the community to build the community

We are having an extremely good year, What do you do when you are ahead? You don't make mistakes. you don't gamble unnecessarily. You protect your lead. You make sure nobody gets hurt. You got to use these  guys in the next game. We won this game. What if we had a good guy tuna company that was on the porpoise team? A lot of guys will buy that so their kids will not get mad at them. We don't care how much it cost to protect the porpoise, just how much it makes. If it cost too much, then we charge a penny more. We could advertise, would you pay a penny more to save a fish? Let the other companies build their plants in the wrong places. Let's be the company that makes the rules, plays fair, that's popular. Forget those nuclear power plants till we know they're safe. That refinery in Pagglesham, we will have to relocate it. It will cost us millions, but we don't care, because we will come out ahead in the end. That plastic stuff that we make, we will have to stop. . We are not here just for one game, we are going all the way....And we'll already have won.

The above is part of the script from the Movie, Heaven can Wait. the movie came out in 1978.  That was years before the concept of Shared value initiative came out. The 1970's was supposed to me the era of the 'me' generation, yet we see the early concept of joint responsibility to every ones gain. This is the concept of Shared Value initiative. Where big business works with the community to protect the oceans, the environment. The concept is for business to work with the community to build the community for the long run and that in turn will cost the company for the now, but in the end the company will also gain.

Mauro Libi: Success usually comes from failing many times

Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. In the business world it is a very competitive world. Whether you are a doctor or you are a salesman or work in any other facet in the world of business if you want to make it, then you have to distinguish yourself. You have to offer a better service than anyone else. You have to constantly come up with ideas on how to stand out. This takes hard work. Whether it means getting more education. Whether it means doing research and development and figuring out how to come out with a better new improved product. It can mean offering better customer service. This means more hours and effort than any of your competition is willing to do. Thomas Edison had a saying that "Opportunity is missed by most people, because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."

There is no substitute for hard work. In the business world, you need to remember that it is not about you. It is about your customer. All about your customer. So look through your customers eyes and see what they want and deliver in their wishes. Also do not be afraid to try different ideas. Success usually comes from failing many times. Do not get discouraged, success many times is just one more try away. If you are afraid to take chances , then you will always be average and never have that chance at success. Your reward will come from your customer. If your customer is extremely satisfied then they will reward you by becoming not only  a loyal customer but a spokesperson for your business as they brag to all your future potential customers about your outstanding services

Mauro Libi: During those times of trying and frustration, you need to keep a positive attitude and it will happen.

Ever feel like you are not happy with the way things are going and that you should just give up. Well then, you are in good company. Thomas Edison, the great inventor often felt that way. "Discontent is the first necessity of progress. Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I'll show you a failure."  If you are one that hustles and takes chances then you feel feel frustrated at times. During those times of trying and frustration, you need to keep a positive attitude and it will happen.

"Many of life's failures are people who do not realize how close to success they were, when they gave up." Why did Thomas Edison succeed? He succeeded because he did not give up.  When he invented the light bulb, he had three thousand tries that did not work. He did not look at it as failures but as stepping stones toward success. Having a positive attitude is the key. Thomas Edison claims that he never made a discovery. He just took over where someone else gave up and he didn't give up.
