Mauro Libi: What is sofrology and how can it help you?

Sophrology is a scientific and humanistic discipline, it is a philosophy, which is in charge of studying all physical and psychological ways, methods and techniques that are able to help us to find the conscience in harmony, that is, the serenity of the mind. It should be noted that sophrology is not, nor does it claim to be, any esoteric, spiritualistic art or any other trend that wants to stand out.

Sophrology has nothing to do with hypnosis, with parapsychology, much less with rituals. Sophrology is the product of research carried out by physicians’ neurologists, physiologists and psychiatrists in European universities, which begins in Spain with a great scientific rigor. Sophrology is a practical, humanist philosophy, in function of improving the emotional life quality, which today has been called emotional intelligence.

Sophrology emerged from the Colombian neuropsychiatrist, Alfonso Caycedo, in 1960, in Spain, when he served as an assistant at the Provincial Hospital de Madrid that nowadays is considered the father of modern psychiatry in Europe: J.J. López Ibor. It emerged as a medical specialty and after many years it was also diversified to the sofropedagogy, which is a branch of sophrology in which the medical act doesn’t intervene, but is dedicated to teaching a series of methods and techniques so people try to find themselves in a prudent emotional and existential balance. It is, to put it in some way, the normalization of our behaviors that have gone by different ways by the lack of serenity.

At that moment, doctors and psychologists were searching for a tool that would help them humanize the hospital-physician-patient relationship and avoid recurring phenomenon in which the patient loses his identity to become a mere medical history number. The doctors wanted to establish a doctor-patient relationship in which it was possible to ask questions that were unimaginable for the moment, such as whether the person felt loved, whether he liked poetry or other art disciplines. It wanted to establish a more human medical relationship.

In the next episode we will continue to deepen this interesting scientific discipline.
